Much of the excitement surrounding the threequel stemmed from rampant speculation about potential cameos. This film serves as both a nostalgic nod and a no-holds-barred tribute to the defunct 20th Century Fox Marvel universe before its acquisition by Disney in 2019.
The rumors spanned from cryptic clues in Taylor Swift’s latest album to Halle Berry’s Storm-inspired hairstyle on Instagram. Yet, the four most surprising cameos in the film are so off-the-wall and unexpected that they are bound to exceed expectations.
Here’s a look at the quartet of characters that Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine encounter in their high-octane, irreverent comic book adventure:
Chris Evans… but not in his iconic role as Captain America
In one of the most delightfully shocking moments in Deadpool & Wolverine, the dynamic duo encounters a legendary hero previously brought to life by Chris Evans during a trip to the Void—an interdimensional junkyard that literally houses the discarded remnants of 20th Century Fox and Marvel’s past (and less successful) comic book ventures. Earlier in the film, Reynolds’ Wade Wilson/Deadpool, eager to join the ranks of the Avengers, is thrilled to spot Evans and anticipates hearing the iconic phrase from Avengers: Endgame—“Avengers, assemble!” However, in a twist, Evans instead exclaims, “Flame on!” and transforms into a blazing figure soaring through the sky, resurrecting his role as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch, from the 2005 Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel. The ensuing scene is a wild, gory spectacle that fits perfectly within the irreverent and outrageous world of a Deadpool film.
